Abstract

*† Since 1989, the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) has been working on Solid Fuel Ramjet (SFRJ) propulsion for gun launched projectiles. Within the framework of international co-operations on SFRJ projectiles the main components of a free jet test facility were designed and developed at TNO to enable on-ground verification of the functioning of complete SFRJ projectiles. The present paper describes the free jet test facility including some design aspects of its critical components. In addition some typical results are presented of free jet experiments to verify the capability of critical projectile parts to withstand the aerodynamic heating, to verify the intake performance and to verify the functioning of complete SFRJ projectiles. These results largely contributed to the successful demonstration of a constant velocity Mach 4+ sea level flight of a SFRJ projectile.
