Abstract

The effects of thyroidectomy and of administration of thyroxine on the sloughing cycle have been investigated in the snake, Chionactis occipitalis. Thyroidectomy increases the frequency of sloughing whereas the injection of thyroxine (8 μg on alternate days) prevents sloughing in both intact and thyroidectomized animals. Histological study of skin biopsy samples shows that after thyroidectomy, the resting phase of the sloughing cycle is greatly reduced in length; it is the only phase seen in thyroxine-treated animals.
