Abstract

The field of speech-language pathology and dysphagia has continuously evolved over the past 30 years. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have become part of a strong, skilled ancillary team with physicians. A multidisciplinary team must consist of professionals with analytical paradigms that share a common purpose to optimize patient health. Diagnosis, treatment, and management of reflux disease require the use of such a team. The aim of this chapter is to introduce you to the role of the speech-language pathologist in diagnosis and treatment of dysphagia. Reflux disease can present with symptoms of oropharyngeal and pharyngeal dysphagia. This chapter will familiarize the reader with the diagnostic testing and findings to help differentiate reflux as the cause from other pharyngoesophageal pathologies.
