Abstract
SUMMARY Perinatal substance use affects approximately 10-15% of the population at any given time. Although it is not completely clear whether perinatal substance use is the cause of poor outcomes or a result of related factors such as poverty, environmental deprivation, violence in the home, or depression, the impact on maternal well-being and neonatal outcomes is enormous and the cost to society high. As this issue continues to receive state and national attention, the role for social workers as essential members of the treatment team is increasingly important.
