Abstract

An analysis of the effects of the rod position on the TEM 00 mode volume and on the resonator stability is presented. The behaviour of the stability range and of the spot size on the rod, strongly dependent on the rod position, are entirely described by means of simple and significative diagrams. Experiments performed on a cw mode-locked Nd:YAG laser with a standard convex-concave resonator confirm the theoretical predictions and allow the optimization of the output power by properly positioning the rod. A mode-locking average power of 8 W with a pulse duration of 75 ps has been obtained without the presence of apertures in the laser cavity.
