Abstract

The care needs of childbearing women have changed in the past 20 years and the maternity care team has expanded to include other professionals and increasing numbers of unregistered maternity support workers (MSWs). MSWs are now an indispensable part of the maternity care team. However, their role has often been overlooked and undervalued in the past. This article considers the context of maternity care, the role of the MSW, their potential career opportunities and their contribution to high–quality maternity care. The focus is principally England, as other parts of the UK may have slightly different arrangements.
