Abstract

The race problem is, and has always been, a national problem of the first magnitude. Yet, it poses a much more serious challenge to Southern leadership than it does to leadership outside the South. It is in the South that the status of Negroes represents the most serious contradiction to the principles of freedom and equality to which our nation is dedicated. And, it is only in the South that the total culture is organized along racial lines designed to accord, by tradition and law, all white people superior social status, and to relegate all Negroes, regardless of achievements, to some lower or inferior social status.
