Abstract

The aerosol in a non industrial town is strongly influenced by emissions from motor vehicles. In Europe increasing fractions of small cars and all trucks are equipped with diesel engines, e.g. in Vienna about 11% of the total registered vehicles are powered with a diesel motor, consuming 32 % of the fuel supplied by the gas stations. Diesel powered vehicles are a major source for l ight absorbing soot particles. Besides diesel vehicles also all other combustion processes are a source for graphitic carbon. Therefore a source apportionment is d i f f i cu l t .
