Abstract
Palliative care is defined as an approach that aims to improve the quality of life of patients and their families, faced with problems associated with life-threatening illnesses, through the prevention and relief of suffering through early identification, assessment and treatment of pain. The incorporation of dentists into palliative care teams is a significant advance from the perspective of patient care. Professionals with their specialized skills can significantly improve the quality of life of patients suffering from serious and limiting illnesses. Therefore, the present study aims to identify studies in the literature that deal with the integration of dentists and their importance in the palliative care team. The association between the descriptors was used in the main databases: (Dentists) AND (palliative care). After selecting 19 articles that met the inclusion criteria, a summary table was prepared with the main findings of the selected articles. Most studies showed that the dentist plays a fundamental role in the palliative care team, being an important part of it. It is clear that its actions help prevent oral health conditions that harm the general condition of patients undergoing palliative care. It is concluded that the inclusion of this professional leads to a crucial advance in guaranteeing comprehensive and humanized care for terminally ill patients.
