Prior to this he held several positions in information systems security and control related positions with US government agencies, including director of information services for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms of the US Treasury Department and Manager of the Systems Security and Privacy Department of the US Defense Department Computer Institute. While he held the latter position Braithwaite was a special consultant to the US Privacy Protection Study Commission. He also is a member of the faculty of the University of Maryland and lectures regularly at the US National Defense University. Braithwaite holds an MA in government and public administration from the American University and a BBA from Rockhurst College, Kansas City MO.
