Abstract

According to The Millennium Goals, 2005 was considered a breakthrough year, especially in the areas of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality (Uganda National NGO Forum,). In Uganda the figure of 506 maternal deaths/100,000 live births has remained high in spite of a huge amount of money and effort expended on reproductive health programmes. According to information from M.O.H, most direct causes of maternal mortality in Uganda include bleeding, infection abortion and lack of antenatal and postnatal health care. A cross-sectional observational study was carried out in Kitimbwa, Kayunga District, Uganda. The objectives were to evaluate the knowledge and skills of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in their role as auxiliary midwives.
