Abstract
Changing forces worldwide are creating the need for high-technology companies in Australia to consider new types of business arrangement. One such arrangement is a strategic alliance. There are a variety of different types of strategic alliance available to such companies to enable them to keep pace with technology development worldwide, and to provide them with the resources to meet the demands created by the changing forces of national and international competition and Australia's increasing reliance on international trade. Essentially, these forces can be seen as either a pressure of resource scarcity or the pressure of coercion. Strategic alliances formed to counter these forces are not, however, without their costs, which must be given careful consideration in the decision to enter into a cooperative business arrangement with another company.
