Abstract

AbstractThis chapter will describe the role of voluntary industry consensus standards in guiding the safe application of human–robot collaboration (HRC) in industrial settings. It will also describe the nature of voluntary industry consensus standards, providing an overview of how such standards are developed, thoughts on how standards impact innovation in the marketplace and how standards provide safety requirements for industrial HRC. The history of industrial robot safety standards will be discussed, along with areas of potential future work. Challenges and limitations of voluntary industry consensus standards will be identified, both in general and specifically in the area of closer human–robot collaboration in industry.
