Abstract

A method is described to calculate quantitatively the phenomena of optical pumping ofF-centres in alkali halides. To that purpose transition probabilities and certain “spinmixing parameters” are calculated by taking properly into account the fine structure and hyperfine structure of the states involved in the pumping cycle. Good agreement with experiment is found which confirms the validity of the approach to optical pumping on one hand, and of the models of the states involved on the other hand.
