Abstract

It has been hypothesized that probiotics might be efficacious in the prevention and treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children. Evidence of efficacy in the prevention of community-acquired and nosocomial diarrhea exists. This review summarizes the evidence of the role of probiotic agents in infectious diarrhea in children and reviews the mechanism of action and safety in their clinical application.
