Abstract

Sonya Stephenson and Virginia Wakefield explain the importance of fracture prevention, looking at the work of fracture liaison services and outlining the vital part that practice nurses can play in identifying and preventing fractures due to osteoporosis This article explores the role of the practice nurse in preventing fragility fractures occurring as a result of osteoporosis. It focuses on the nurse's role in the identification of fragility fractures by screening patients using a good understanding of risk factors for osteoporosis. The article discusses the challenging identification of vertebral fractures in particular, which often present in primary care, but which are often not picked up without the knowledge of when to assess for osteoporosis. The article demonstrates the key role that practice nurses can play in fracture prevention, in partnership with local fracture liaison and osteoporosis services.
