Abstract

The advent of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg, sildenafil, vardenafil, tadalafil) as safe and effective forms of oral drug therapy for erectile dysfunction (ED) has lead to a larger number of patients seeking therapy for this medical condition. However, not all men receive an effective response to these medications, and some men have contraindications or experience side effects. For the properly selected patient who fails to respond to nonsurgical therapy, the implantation of a penile prosthesis can provide for satisfactory therapy. Improvements in device reliability, device durability, and surgical techniques have made penile implant surgery a safe option with high satisfaction rates for the management of ED.
