Abstract

The Delaware Mountain Group in west Texas and southeast New Mexico provides a unique opportunity to evaluate the impact of organic matter alteration in sediment diagenesis. Trace elements have been measured using neutron activation analysis in organic bitumen as well as authigenic and detrital material separates. Correlations between siltstone organic matter and authigenic minerals in adjacent permeable sandstones establish the close relationship between the organic matter and pore water from which the authigenic minerals precipitated.
