Abstract

The first part informs about the seminar 'The role of metrology in economic and social development' organized by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in collaboration with the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OILM) and the International Measurement Confederation. The rationales for the seminar which took place in Braunschweig, Germany, as well as the results obtained are described. The second part gives an overview of the International Measurement Confederation, IMEKO, its organization and programmes. A brief comparison is drawn between the Metre Convention, the OIML and the IMEKO. The activities of IMEKO's Technical Committee 11 (TC 11 ) Metrological Infrastructures' are described, which mainly aim at supporting especially the small and medium-sized enterprises by providing information and advice on metrology and related matters. Examples are shown on how the information is generated and passed on to the client.
