Abstract

Fluid mechanics enters into many aspects of metallurgical processing operations involved in the extraction and refining of ferrous and non ferrous metala. This paper describes mathematical models for slab, thin slab and strip casting operations. It is concluded that inclusion fload-out in the tundish and mould, and the elimination of slag entrainment during the emptying of ladles and tundishes during casting, are needed for optimizing steel quality, particularly for thin slab and ship casting operations.
