Abstract

Vesicles isolated from epiphyseal chick cartilage have been studiedin vitro. They did not actively transport calcium. The alkaline phosphatase, pyrophosphatase and ATPase activities are similar whether solubilized or membrane bound. The ATPase is not activated by calcium. The vesicles can induce precipitation of calcium phosphate, this nucleation activity being partly due to the vesicles themselves and partly to their calcium phosphate content.
