Abstract

Magnesium is a very important nutrient for the formation of chlorophyll and affects the density of stomata. The aim of the research was to evaluate the role of magnesium in the formation of chlorophyll and stomatal density. The study was conducted in Deli Tua, Deli Serdang Regency, Sumatera Utara from May to August 2019. The experimental design used was a factorial randomized block design. As the first factor, soybean varieties consist of Demas, Devon-1, Anjasmoro, Dering-1. The second factor is dose of magnesium applied consisting of 0; 100; 200 and 300 kg MgSO4/ha. The research result indicated that the highest total chlorophyll was found in Dering-1 compared to other varieties. The highest of stomatal density was found in Demas variety. The highest of chlorophyll total was found in the treatment of 100 kg MgSO4/ha on Dering-1 variety, while the highest stomatal density was found in the control treatment (0 kg MgSO4/ha) on Demas variety.
