Abstract

1. Techniques useful in screening the blood serum of fishes for the presence of macromolecular antifreeze compounds are described and discussed. 2. Several species of teleost fishes, representing phylogenetically widely divergent families, are shown to have macromolecular anifreeze substances in their blood serum. 3. The antifreeze compounds may account for as much as 60% of the freezing depression of the serum. 4. The antifreeze substances lower the freezing point of the serum without appreciably depressing the melting point, thereby resulting in a thermal hysteresis.
