Abstract

1. 1. Factors which affect the stability of peroxisomal membrane in vitro were investigated. 2. 2. All tested chelating agents (EDTA, o-phenantroline, EGTA) increased the unstability of peroxisomes at neutral pH. 3. 3. The decrease of the latency of catalase at neutral and alkaline pH was prevented by addition of mono- and divalent cations, ethylenediammonium chloride, protamine, and histone. 4. 4. Some anions (fluoride acetate, succinate, ribonucleic acid, dextran sulfate) increased the peroxisomal membrane lability at neutral pH. 5. 5. Calcium increased the electrostatic interaction of some matrix enzymes with the peroxisomes. 6. 6. Results indicate that at neutral and alkaline pH the peroxisomal membrane has a net negative charge on its surface, which affects the stability of peroxisomes in vitro.
