Abstract

As the world population is growing, its water demand is becoming more and more diversified; the difference between the demand and supply is continuously increasing. The solution to this problem is to systematically utilize the available water resources, or harvest additional water potential from new water resources projects and/or by formulating strategies for proper utilization of the available resources. Because most of the rivers and their tributaries in India are Seasonal, the Key Step taken for the solution to this difficulty is the “Reservoir Projects”. The development of a release policy for a reservoir is a multistage decision-making process. A model is required to be developed for each system of reservoirs. The essential need for the formulation of the optimal policy is to determine the schedule of releases from a reservoir system, which can maximize or minimize the utilities associated with the release of water. Numerous algorithms have been used to advance the results of Reservoir operation and maximize the net benefit, but due to their limitations, the selection of an appropriate model for deriving reservoir operating policies is difficult, and more often there is scope for further improvement as choosing a particular model for reservoir operation depends on the reservoir characteristics considered, availability of data, specified objectives, and constraints. In the present paper, various optimizations Algorithm and techniques are compared along with their Pros and cons, and limitations to find the most appropriate Algorithm for reservoir operation.
