Abstract

Inflammatory mediators such as macrophage-derived cytokines, tumour necrosis factor and interleukins, platelet-activating factor, oxygen-derived free radicals, leukotrienes and complement play an important role in the pathophysiology of multisystem organ failure (MSOF). The similarity in clinical presentation between MSOF and necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is considered and the evidence for a possible role of these inflammatory mediators in NEC explored.
