Abstract

Major advances have been made in the understanding of the pathophysiology of psoriasis. The authors review the role of interleukin (IL) 17 in the pathogenesis of psoriasis and provide updates on approved and investigational therapies targeting IL-17 and the IL-17 receptor. A PubMed search was performed for relevant literature. The IL-23/Th17 signaling pathway (including IL-17) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. Biologic agents that block IL-17 (secukinumab and ixekizumab) or its receptor (brodalumab) are effective and safe for the treatment of psoriasis.
