Abstract

• Hydroxyl groups activated benzoic acid for enhanced reactivity with ozone. • Possible pathways for the generation of O 2 ·- and·OH in ozonation of benzoic acids were proposed. • Plausible mechanism for the activated ozonation of benzoic acid was elucidated. • Synergistic effect in co-ozonation and reduced superiority in catalytic ozonation were observed with extra·OH production.
