Abstract

1. Facial growth and development is a complicated biologic process through which the genetic pattern takes form and, assisted by function, progresses to maturity. The harmony and balance of the mature face are determined by: a. the individual units of both hard and soft tissue; b. the genetic growth rates and gradients; c. the magnitude of interference with physiologic factors through disease, pressure and trauma and the time at which these adverse circumstances occur. 2. Mechanical or other therapy may assist in obtaining balance and function of the dento-facial mechanism. This is attained largely by changing positions of teeth and alveolar bone. 3. Because the effect of mechanical therapy is very largely upon alveolar bone, the longer the dentition can enjoy normal functional influence the greater will be the measure of inherent growth and developmental potentiality obtained. As a consequence, the probability of enduring balance and stability is enhanced.
