Abstract

Slices of skin from chick-embryo were incubated in a medium containing [ 14C]-proline and the specific activity of hydroxy[ 14C]proline was studied in the free form, in 0.2 M NaCl-soluble collagens and in insoluble collagen. During incubation for a period of 4 h, the amount of free proline in the medium decreases whereas the amount of free hydroxyproline increases. There are no changes in the amounts of either of the free amino acid in the incubated tissue. The changes in specific activities of free hydroxyproline and of soluble and insoluble collagens suggest that free hydroxyproline i the degradation product of newly formed soluble collagens.
