Abstract
Abstract. During an 18-month field study of diana monkeys in Sierra Leone, data were collected to investigate whether adult females are involved in territorial calling bouts, and if so, how male and female calling behaviour inter-relate. Female chatter-scream vocalizations were heard during territorial calling bouts and inter-group encounters. Adult females initiated territorial calling bouts significantly more frequently than did the group male, suggesting that female calls serve a territorial function. While loud calls from other groups may act as a stimulus for female calling, other factors, including location of caller and recipients, are likely to be of considerable importance to male and female roles in territorial defence.
