Abstract

An ethics consult is appropriate when there are questions regarding continuation of treatments at the end of life either due to uncertainty of prognosis or conflict of values regarding which actions should be taken. Accordingly, an ethics consult may be requested to help resolve uncertainty for an individual or between members of a family unit or help facilitate conflicts among multiple parties, e.g., between families and the healthcare team, between different members of the families, or between different groups of healthcare professionals. Limited research suggests beneficial effects of ethics consult for end-of-life decision-making in terms of improved quality of care for patients and enhanced family satisfaction. Future research should investigate how best to integrate ethics expertise in the ICU.
