Abstract

Purpose: Transplantation results in significant cellular injury to the lung, which likely contributes to the development of bronchiolitis obliterans. This study examined the mechanisms of airway epithelial cell death and airway obliteration in a murine heterotopic tracheal transplant model. To investigate the relationship between airway epithelial cell apoptosis and transplant-induced airway obliteration, apoptosis was selectively inhibited at the level of Fas-Fas ligand interaction and caspase cascade activation.
