Abstract

The activities and role of non-governmental organizations in the UNCED process have received widespread attention over the preparatory period of UNCED and during UNCED itself in June 1992. Many have stressed the importance of these activities and the input or these organizations in UNCED's results. UNCED has not been the first international forum where non-governmental (environmental) organizations have been active over the past years. Especially since UNCED's predecessor, the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, non-governmental (environmental) organizations have had a chance to attend and participate in meetings of international governmental organizations.
