Abstract

A mechanism of ion-induced erosion of frozen gases is suggested on the basis of the synergistic effect of electronic and nuclear energy deposition. According to this mechanism, during the life of electronically excited states, the surface binding energy is effectively reduced and the collisional sputtering yield is enhanced.
