Abstract

Insights into the electronic structures and energetics of actinide atoms and ions are key to understanding and predicting the properties of this series of elements, which are radioactive. Many members of this series are man-made. We have studied several chemical reactions of free actinide ions (An+) to better understand the electronic nature of this unique group of elements and enhance the general understanding of the periodic table. This understanding enables better predictions of the character of heavy actinide and transactinide elements, where relativistic effects are expected to play an increasingly significant role. The basis for these studies along with a summary and interpretation of the key results is described, together with the first results for the shortest-lived nuclide studied to date by this technique, Bk-249.
