Abstract

Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterine cavity. It can affect any organ in the peritoneal cavity including the appendix. The incidence of appendiceal endometriosis in the literature is 0.8-22% [1]. Elective coincidental appendectomy is the removal of the appendix at the time of another surgical procedure unrelated to appreciable appendiceal pathology [2]. ACOG reports a potential benefit in performing an elective coincidental appendectomy in patients undergoing gynecologic procedures for pelvic pain or endometriosis secondary to potential for future appendiceal complications related to these disorders.
