Abstract

THE PAST 10 YEARS have seen the helicopter grow into a sophisticated primary weapon, transport, and all-round utility vehicle. During this same period, Doppler radar has also advanced to its present status of an accurate, lightweight, self-contained navigation equipment having immense versatility. Doppler radar, as a basic velocity sensor, provides information that is ideally suited for use in the automatic control of a helicopter both in hovering and directional flight. This capability was recognized in the early stages of Doppler radar development. As a result, Doppler radar is teamed with the helicopter to provide one of the most versatile anti-submarine warfare weapons in the United States Navy’s arsenal, a helicopter capable of day-and-night, all-weather operations.* Until the advent of automatic stabilization equipment (ASE) for the helicopter, however, the capabilitics of this remarkable team were only partially realized. Now, Doppler radar used with the automatic stabilization equipment frees the pilot from many flight details, permitting him to concentrate his attention in other areas.
