Abstract
We tend, hardly surprisingly, to equate comedy with laughter. One of the most famous studies of comedy, that by Henri Bergson, has in the original French the title, ‘Le Rire, essai sur la signification due comique’ (1900). The contemporary Theatre of Comedy concentrates on producing farces and it would not have achieved its great success, sometimes with as many as three productions running simultaneously in London, if it did not milk every moment for laughs. Despite that, comedy is not a simple matter of laughter. At the other extreme, one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, Ben Jonson, wrote:
