Abstract
This chapter is based on qualitative interviews with nine families originally from Mainland China and Taiwan, and explores Chinese grandparents’ roles in their families, their relationships with their adult children, and their involvement in their adult children’s parenting practices. All participants were living in the United States when interviewed. Specific attention is given to cultural, familial, and individual beliefs as well as the contextual factors that influenced intergenerational relations and grand-parenting processes. We include a discussion on culturally sensitive interventions for family therapists working with Chinese multigenerational households.
