Abstract
Since the earliest times of Buddhism, the Buddhist monk has played a central role in both spiritual and social matters. The monks were exhorted to work for the well-being of all, and as a result, they and the Buddhist temple became the centre of the spiritual and agricultural life of villages in Sri Lanka. The western colonical governments discouraged this role and removed monks to the spiritual realm. With independence, this has begun to change and the Sarvodaya Movement has actively incorporated monks in its effort. They participate in a series of training courses and are active in efforts to realize the Sarvodaya ideal of a righteous and economically progressive society.
