Abstract

Density, surface tension and expansivity data are presented for the solvent system (1 − x) (0.454 PbO; 0.546 PbF2) · B2O3, with 0 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.15, and for solutions in these of 5 wt% Y3Al5O12. The density of solvents and solutions with x > 0.6 was found to vary with the position of the bob above the crucible base, indicating a gradient in the B2O3 concentration. Expansivity and surface tension data are interpreted in a rigid sphere model and the results indicate strong PbO/B2O3 complexing, with the F- ions bonded less strongly, and a high degree of solvation.
