Abstract

An examination of the possible uses of each form of material is impossible, given that so many different forms of material are collectively labelled audio-visual aids. Films vary considerably in nature, and each category has particular potential uses in the teaching of history. Audio-visual material can be used to arouse curiosity and makes possible further variation of teaching methods. The use of audio-visual material is justified on those occasions when it sets up the most effective means of communication. It is justified on grounds of efficiency, and also because motivation will probably be increased because the efficiency creates a notion of competence and achievement. All forms of audio-visual material can assist in communicating the 'outside' of events, but some should be used with particular care. A number of prerequisites for the effective use of audio-visual materials apply whatever the purpose of their use.
