Abstract
Background The aim of this article is to describe the development, principles and practices of the Homeless Health Outreach Team in Queensland, Australia. The following article, in the next issue, builds upon this with a case study. Contents Relevant documentation and literature was reviewed. The Homeless Health Outreach Team has developed a model of practice based on local and international experience. Conclusions Specialized mental health services for the homeless have been able to successfully engage and manage clients by working in collaboration with local mental health services, housing, and non-government organisations.
