Abstract

Field experiments were performed on pikas (Ochotona princeps) to determine the role of their short call in the maintenance of territories. Removal of a resident resulted in significant increase in intrusions by adjacent pikas and the persistence of the intruder within the vacant territory. However, replacing a removed resident with its short call was effective in preventing a significant increase in intrusions.
