Abstract

Aim of the studyThe effect of the alcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora Boiss in controlling the symptoms of opium withdrawal compared to methadone was studied.Subject or material and methodsIn a double-blind, randomized clinical trial, alcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora Boiss and methadone were given to 40 patients and withdrawal symptoms in the days of 0,2,7,11 and 15 was evaluated by the CINA scale.ResultsWithdrawal symptoms were controlled in both study groups and these symptoms were tolerated when reducing the methadone dose in the theme group.DiscussionHerbs have been used to treat various diseases, especially chronic and treatment-resistant diseases in countries with a long and traditional culture. Thus, if this is done in no systematic and structured manner, it can be problematic for patients and health systems.ConclusionsAlcoholic extract of Zataria multiflora Boiss can be used as an effective agent in controlling the symptoms of opium withdrawal that need to be considered in future studies.
