Abstract

In this present work, borate glasses with composition 59.5B2O3 - 2P2O5 – 9.5CaO – 9CaF2 – (20 - xNa2O) – xAg2O, with x = 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 mol%, were synthesized by melting-quenching technique. The influence of silver addition on the bioactivity of these glasses was investigated. The in vitro bioactivity was evaluated by: pH measure of the simulated body fluid solution (SBF), in which the samples were soaked for up to 21 days, X-ray diffraction technique (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The cytotoxicity of the glassy samples was analyzed by osteoblastic cells response in solutions containing these samples dissolved. The results of pH measures showed an increase of the SBF alkalinity. The XRD, Raman and FTIR analyses exhibited the presence of hydroxyapatite and fluorapatite phases. Cytotoxicity assay was conducted on osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells for different glass concentration. All the glasses, except the glass with 0.75 mol% of Ag2O for the concentration of 1000 μg/mL, are non-toxic. The antibacterial properties were investigated using the gram-negative and gram-positive Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, respectively. The results of antibacterial tests showed that these borate glasses doped with silver were efficient against both bacteria.
