Abstract
Adequate control of excess water in fine textured, low permeable soils often requires an uneconomical, highly intensive drainage system. Solutions to this problem can be found by using a less intensive drainage system that removes only part of the excess water, complemented by adaptations in farming practices. Two cases are presented to illustrate this principle. The usefulness of soil moisture regime studies in the planning of such solutions is also demonstrated.
