Abstract

The two-dimensional electron gas in field-effect devices is influenced by an accumulation layer close to the 2DEG. It is populated when the chemical potential lies in a gap of the energy spectrum of the 2DEG and is required to assure overall electrical neutrality. The existence of an accumulation layer explains the far-infrared response of quantum dot arrays as well as optical measurements in the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect regime.
