Abstract

A permanent pleurocutaneous window was created to facilitate dependent drainage and efficient irrigation in 18 patients with empyema thoracis. Fourteen patients had mixed tuberculous, and four had non-tuberculous empyemas. Dilute povidone iodine solution was used for irrigation. Eight patients had complete obliteration of the empyema cavity within eight to 20 months. Six are showing satisfactory progress. Three patients died of causes not directly related to the procedure. This technique was found effective as well as economical in the management of chronic empyemas.
